August Library Program

Summer Reading may end in July, but we still have great programs coming up in August! Check out our offerings, including back-to-school events and the beginning of our Let’s Talk About It book discussion series, made possible by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council.

Youth Programs

  • Preschool Story time takes place Tuesdays, August 6, 13, 20, 27; Wednesdays, August 7, 14, 21, 28; Thursdays, August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29: 10:00 am. Ages 3 and up. No registration is required.

  • Join us for Lapsit Story time on Tuesdays, August 6, 13, 20, 27; Wednesdays, Agust 7, 14, 21, 28; Thursdays, August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; 9:30 am. Ages 0-2. No registration required. Tuesday storytimes begin August 6! Thursday storytimes end following August 29.

  • Saturday Family Storytime is on Saturdays, August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; 3:00 pm. No registration required.

  • Join us for a Bilingual Spanish/English Family Storytime at the Main Library on Tuesday, August 27 at 4:00 pm. The Library will continue this bilingual program the last Tuesday of each month. No registration required.

Youth Steam Programs

Ages 5 and up are invited. No registration required. On August 6 and 13, join us for an exciting STEAM based program. On August 20, join us for STEAM fun that will get you ready to go back to school! The recurring monthly ELGO Club takes place on August 27. All LEGOs are provided.

Young Adult Programs

  • DIY Maker Wednesdays will continue on August 7 and 14 from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm in the second floor CRaft Studio. All ages are welcome. No registration required.

  • Teens are invited to Back to Hogwarts Bash on Monday, August 26 from 6:30 — 8:00 pm in the Main Library Assembly Room. Enjoy butterbeer (cream soda), get sorted into Hogwarts houses, create house shirts, and team up to practice their spells together on the interactive Harry Potter;: Wizards Unite mobile game. No registration required.

  • The Let’s Talk About It Book Discussion: Altered Landscapes begins on Thursday, August 29 at 6:30 pm. We return to the popular “Let’s Talk About It” book discussion series for a 5-book series of novels and nonfiction focused on the changing landscape of our home stae of North Carolina. We will meet every two weeks from August 29 through October 24 for a book talk led by a scholar on the subject. Open to all ages; contact the library for the reading list or to reserve copies of the books. The project is made possible by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprft and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Technology Classes

  • The iPad and Tablet Series takes place on Wednesdays from 2:00 until 3:30 pm. The Basics will be covered on August 7 and Apps on August 14. iPads will be supplied or bring a tablet of your choice.

  • Interested in Pinterest and don’t know where to start? Join us on Mondays from 6:30 until 8:00 pm. Pinterest Basics will be covered on August 12 and Getting Started on August 19. Please register at www.pinterest.com prior to the class. An email address and basic internet skills are required.

  • Learn how to choose your next great read at What Do I Read Next? On Wednesday, august 21 from 2:00 until 3:00 pm. Basic Internet skills are required.

  • Need help figuring out your tablet, smartphone or eReader? Drop in to Device Advice on Wednesday, August 28 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm for 1:1 assistance from Library staff. This event takes place in the Main Library Assembly Room. Registration is required.

Local History and Genealogy Programs

  • HeritageQuest is an online genealogy resource containing census records, directories, local history books and Revolutionary War pension applications. Learn more about using this resource on Tuesday, August 6 from 2:00 until 3::00 pm in the Main Library Conference Room. Registration is requested and basic computer skills are required.

Branch Progams — Black Creek

Some programs are funded by a Library Services and technology Act (LSTA) Grant awarded to Wilson County Public Library for the creation of a CrAFT Studio — Creativity, Art, Fabrication, and Technology Lab. The CrAFT Studio will combine the Makerspace movement with STEAM subjects through robotics, coding, crafts, electronics, and more.
