Summer Reading Programs Announced
Wilson County Public Library has been busy preparing for this year’s Summer Reading Program. The goals of Summer Reading are:
• To encourage and motivate children and their families to read for pleasure
• To help school age children maintain their reading skills while on school holiday
• To introduce people to the resources of their public library
• To collect reading data for the NC State Library
• To attract new customers to the library
These programs create a bridge to combat the summer slide. Children who continue to read during the summer return to school without decreased reading ability. Pleasure reading encourages lifelong learning and keeps reading skills sharp. Readers adapt more easily and excel in our fast-paced information rich society, so it’s a win for everyone!
Programs for children will be offered at all six locations and for teens at the Main Library, Lucama and Elm City. The theme Libraries Rock! for children at the Main Library will kick off at 7:00 pm on June 11th. Bring your best strutting costumes and instruments, as we parade with the Bulltown Strutters, Durham’s New Orleans style marching band. On the evening of June 18th, The ScienceTellers present the "Wild West: The Mystery of the Golden Piano". Each Monday will feature a musical guest while Tuesdays will offer a STEM program. We wrap up the summer at the Main library on July 23rd with a family event performance by Kaira Ba. This band features the Senegalese griot, Diali Cissokho. Our finale is funded in memory of Paul Mcrae Kushner, and by the Friends of the Wilson County Public Library.
